AI Alignment and Control: Risks as AI Surpasses Human Abilities
AI Safety Awareness Group Raleigh hosts a free, 90-minute online workshop on AI alignment and control, aimed at people with no technical background, starting at 8:00 PM on November 19, 2026.
The session explains in plain English, without hype or jargon, two questions about increasingly capable AI. Alignment asks whether these systems can be made to do what people intend. Control asks whether people can keep the ability to oversee, correct, or stop them as they grow more capable. The workshop also considers what this could mean for jobs, relationships, and daily life.
Topics include:
- What it would mean for AI to outperform people across most tasks, and how that differs from today's tools
- Why it is hard to make an AI system pursue the goals people actually want, and what happens when it does not
- How researchers try to monitor and correct AI systems, and why that may get harder with more capability
- Which jobs are already being automated or transformed, and how AI is starting to fill roles once held by coworkers, tutors, therapists, and companions
The format includes a beginner-friendly introduction, real-world examples of AI reshaping work and social life, live demos showing both capabilities and emerging risks, and interactive discussion and exercises for testing your own intuitions about the future.
