How Should Schools Navigate Questions About Gender and Sexuality?

Crossing Party Lines Raleigh, NC holds a Zoom discussion on November 8, 2026 at 8:00 PM about how schools should handle questions of gender and sexuality when students, parents, educators and communities hold different beliefs. The group does not try to resolve the wider disagreements over gender or sexuality. It looks at the practical question of how schools should operate despite them.

The organiser says schools often have to weigh several responsibilities at once: individual students' needs and privacy, parents' roles, age-appropriate instruction, how classmates are treated, staff duties and community standards. The conversation covers what people want schools to do when these pull against each other. Discussion questions include:

• What do you most want schools to get right when these issues come up?
• What role should parents have in decisions about their own children, and when should a student's privacy also count?
• How should schools decide what is age-appropriate to discuss or teach?
• What should a school do when one student's needs or beliefs seem to conflict with another's?
• Which decisions belong to families, teachers, schools, school boards or state government, and why?
• What would a fair approach look like to people with very different beliefs, even if no one gets everything they want?
